“Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA, formerly known as ankylosing spondylitis or Bechterews Disease) is an inflammatory disease of the spine and represents a rare but important diagnosis in cases of back pain. Despite intensive efforts, the time from symptom onset to treatment still spans several years. Currently, the primary challenge lies in achieving an accurate diagnosis to ensure that patients receive not only early but also the appropriate therapy. To support colleagues outside of specialized centers in diagnosing and treating axSpA, an interdisciplinary board has been established. This board brings together expertise from rheumatology, radiology, physical medicine, and orthopedics to cover all aspects – from diagnosis and initiation of therapy to managing complications. With this approach, the interdisciplinary axSpA board makes a significant contribution to the timely and reliable diagnosis of suspected inflammatory spinal diseases.”
