"The project "Integration of Palliative Care into Intensive Care Medicine" aims to systematically and evidence-based embed palliative care competencies into everyday intensive care practice. In response to the increasing demand for patient-centered care for critically ill and terminally ill patients in intensive care units, this initiative seeks to complement the traditionally technical-medical approach with specialized palliative expertise. Central to the project is a multiprofessional approach: sustainable cultural change can only be achieved through the active involvement of all professionals working within the intensive care setting.

A key milestone was the interdisciplinary symposium "Intensive Palliative Care," held on November 23, 2024. The event addressed legal, communicative, and clinical aspects of this topic. Current projects from several Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin intensive care units were presented and actively discussed. The symposium facilitated on-site networking, laying the groundwork for a planned interdisciplinary, cross-campus collaboration. Plans are underway to establish this symposium as a recurring event.

Originally, the implementation of a multiprofessional basic course in palliative care, which had already been successfully conducted multiple times internally within the department was pallend, but could not be realized in 2024. Looking ahead, the course is intended to be offered regularly, with the aim of structurally embedding the program and expanding access to additional departments as well as external participants. This will promote the sustainable dissemination of palliative care competencies within the intensive care environment."
